                     Peace Education Oasis

Little Friends for Peace (LFFP) is initiating its first-ever Capital Campaign to finance a Peace Education Oasis in Accokeek, Maryland. The purpose of the Oasis will be to welcome Washington-Baltimore area children into an experience of peace close to the earth and into the skills of peacemaking.

LFFP Co-Founders Mary Joan (MJ) and Jerry Park have shared the dream of creating a Peace Education Oasis ever since MJ's family sold the residential camp that MJ directed 28 years ago. Since the sale of “Sundance Ranch,” they have traveled the nation directing inter-generational peace day-camps and after-school clubs for kids, giving workshops for teachers, parents, and families, and publishing three guidebooks on teaching nonviolence.

The Parks’ dedication to living out St. Francis' call to "live simply, courageously, joyfully and always in conversion" and to Mahatma Gandhi’s proclamation that “If we truly want peace, we must start with the children” has been well recognized.  This year, Pax Christi USA is honoring them as the 2008 Peace Educators of the Year..

Receiving this award has motivated the Parks to make their dream of creating the  Peace Education Oasis a reality.

MJ & Jerry have heard a call to provide people thirsting for peace with a Peace Education Oasis. They have found a wooded 5-acre property in Piscataway National Park (20 miles south of Washington, DC)

  • a home whose rooms will become a spacious meeting/dining area, a peace museum and a peace library that accommodate small group 'home bases', a small group or family sleeping area
  • a heated garage for young large-group activities, art/work shop and bike shop
  • a windowed garage that will become a hermitage/prayer room
  • a mini-barn and pasture for small animals
  • a fenced garden and a play field
  • one mile from the Colonial Farm and organic garden staffed by educators from the Accokeek Foundation
